On being "Dead Right"
Which is better, when trusting your dead bolt - to be dead right, or dead wrong? Placing your trust in your existing dead bolt, the device you use to secure your home, may be risky. The mechanics and physics of what makes a dead bolt work is not so secure as one may think. Of course, diffent combinations of tumbler heights, and the number of pin-alignments involved in making a key fit a given lock, means that the 'right key' may be one out of millions of keys that would 'fit' a particular lock brand. But - what if someone were to create a 'master key', a one-key-fits-all answer to the question "What are the chances that someone else will have a key that will open my lock?"
As it turns out, your chances of security are pretty much nil, and have been for decades. The technique for creating such a key has been around that long. It is with the advent of the internet, and the power of Google, that keeping this secret among the dishonest crooks is no longer possible. Anyone can learn how to make such a key, and now - they can even be purchased on the internet, cheaply! (Go ahead - do a Google Search.)
Quoting from the February 2007 article in Snopes
"Publicizing bump keys on the internet may increase the incidence of their use in burglaries and other crimes."
"The best advice is to consult a professional locksmith and obtain a security assessment of your current locks and/or suggestions for more secure replacements." Watch the video, then decide for yourself whether or not to follow the advice given by Snopes over 2 years ago: Consult a professional. |
